The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
