The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And [by] the moon when it follows it 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 The people of Thamud rejected (the truth) as a result of their rebelliousness 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
