The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
