The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and he belied the finest 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
