The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
