The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 He will be far away from the most pious. (The first Caliph S. Abu Bakr Siddiq) 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
