The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
