The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
