The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it covers 1 and the day in splendour 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
