The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
