The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and he belied the finest 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
