The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And accepts the best, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But save him who fears 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 He verily will be content. 21
