The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
