The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
