The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
