The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
