The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it covers the day, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
