The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
