The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
