The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day in splendour 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
