The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and the day in splendour 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 you strive in various ways. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But save him who fears 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He verily will be content. 21
