The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And he is going to be satisfied. 21
