The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Teacheth man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away - 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
