The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Indeed, surely the human is very insolent 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
