The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
