The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 Seest thou one who forbids- 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
