The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 The One Who taught man all what he did not know. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Have you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, 9 A votary when he (turns) to pray? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then let him call upon his henchmen! 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
