The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
