The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - 1 created man from a clot [of blood]. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We will now call the guards! 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
