The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A votary when he (turns) to pray? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 or orders piety? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
