The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient: 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We, will call the Zabania (the harsh angels of Hell). 18 No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah). ۩ 19
