The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
