The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, 1 Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Have you seen the one who forbids 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 or orders piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
