The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely to your Lord is your return. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
