The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 or orders piety? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
