The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees everything? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 Let him call on his associates for help 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
