In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 Have you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A forelock that lies, is sinful. 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
