The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
