Children of Israel, recall My favors to you and the preference that I gave to you over all nations. 47 And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be aided. 48 And when We delivered you from the folk of Pharaoh who were visiting you with evil chastisement, slaughtering your sons, and sparing your women; and in that was a grievous trial from your Lord. 49 and when We cleft the sea before you, and thus saved you and caused Pharaoh's people to drown before your very eyes; 50 We appointed for Moses forty nights [on Mount Sinai], and in his absence you took to worshipping the calf, and thus became transgressors. 51 Then after that We pardoned you so that you may be grateful. 52 And when We gave unto Moses the Scripture and the criterion (of right and wrong), that ye might be led aright. 53 and when Moses said unto his people: "O my people! Verily, you have sinned against yourselves by worshipping the calf; turn then, in repentance to your Maker and mortify yourselves; this will be the best for you in your Maker's sight". And thereupon He accepted your repentance: for, behold, He alone is the Acceptor of Repentance, the Dispenser of Grace. 54 And when you said, 'Moses, we will not believe thee till we see God openly'; and the thunderbolt took you while you were beholding. 55 Then We raised you up after your death: Ye had the chance to be grateful. 56 And We made the clouds to give shade over you and We sent to you manna and quails: Eat of the good things that We have given you; and they did not do Us any harm, but they made their own souls suffer the loss. 57 And recall what time We said: enter this town and eat plenteously therefrom as ye list, and enter the gate prostrating yourselves and say: forgiveness; We shall forgive you your trespasses, and anon We shall increase unto the well-doers. 58 But those who were unjust changed it for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them, so We sent upon those who were unjust a pestilence from heaven, because they transgressed. 59
