O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds. 47 Take heed of the day when no man will be useful to man in the least, when no intercession matter nor ransom avail, nor help reach them. 48 (Children of Israel, recall My favor) of saving you from the Pharaoh's people who afflicted you with the worst kind of cruelty, slaying your sons and sparing your women. Your suffering was indeed a great trial from your Lord. 49 And (remember) when We separated the sea for you and saved you and drowned Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people while you were looking (at them, when the sea-water covered them). 50 And remember We appointed forty nights for Moses, and in his absence ye took the calf (for worship), and ye did grievous wrong. 51 Yet after that We pardoned you, so that you might give thanks. 52 And recall what time We vouchsafed unto Musa the Book and the distinction that haply ye may be guided. 53 Moses said to his people, "My people, you have done wrong to yourselves by worshipping the calf. Seek pardon from your Lord and slay yourselves." He told them that it would be best for them in the sight of their Lord, Who would forgive them, for He is All-forgiving and All-merciful. 54 And remember ye said: "O Moses! We shall never believe in thee until we see Allah manifestly," but ye were dazed with thunder and lighting even as ye looked on. 55 Then We raised you up after your death that you may give thanks. 56 And We gave you the shade of clouds and sent down to you Manna and quails, saying: "Eat of the good things We have provided for you:" (But they rebelled); to us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls. 57 And recall what time We said: enter this town and eat plenteously therefrom as ye list, and enter the gate prostrating yourselves and say: forgiveness; We shall forgive you your trespasses, and anon We shall increase unto the well-doers. 58 Then those who did wrong changed the Word that had been told them; so We sent down upon those who did wrong a scourge from heaven, for they were wont to transgress. 59
