The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 "He wishes to drive you away from the land. So what do you advise?" 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 to summon every wellversed sorcerer to you' 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He said, “You throw”; when they threw, they cast a magic spell upon the people’s eyes and terrified them, and they brought a great magic. 116 And [then] We inspired Moses, "Throw down thy staff!" - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions: 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 The magicians who were defeated on the spot and were proved to be worthless, 119 The sorcerers fell to the ground in homage, 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 The Lord of Musa and Haroun. 122 Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "You have believed in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission. Surely, this is a plot which you have plotted in the city to drive out its people, but you shall come to know. 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on alternate sides and then crucify you all!" 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 "The only reason you have to hate us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord as they came to us. O our Lord, give us sufficient endurance that we may die submitting (to You)." 126
