Said the Chiefs of the people of Pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed. 109 who seeks to drive you out from your land. What would you have us do?' 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, saying, 'We shall surely have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 113 He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)." 114 They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]." 115 He said: cast ye. Then when they cast down, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and terrified them and brought mighty magic to bear. 116 Then We revealed to Moses: 'Now, throw down your staff' And thereupon it swallowed up their false invention. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed and what they had produced came to nothing: 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the enchanters were thrown down, prostrating (themselves). 120 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Fir'awn said: believed ye in him ere I have given you leave? Verily this is a plot ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive forth the people thereof. So presently ye shall know. 123 Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one. 124 They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord: 125 Thou takest vengeance upon us only because we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour out upon us patience, and gather us unto Thee surrendering.' 126
