The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 Let them eat and enjoy; and let their hopes deceive them, soon they shall know. 3 We never destroyed any town without pre-ordaining the fate of its people. 4 No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back. 5 They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! 6 Why do you not bring to us the angels if you are of the truthful ones? 7 We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. 8 Lo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian. 9 We sent messengers before you to the previous peoples, 10 but there was never a messenger who came to them but they mocked him: 11 Even so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin, 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 they would still say, "Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched." 15
