So, when the envoys came to the folk of Lot, 61 he said to them: 'I do not know you' 62 They said: nay! we have come to thee with that whereof they have been dubitating. 63 "We have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth. 64 So set forth, thou with thy family, in a watch of the night, and follow after the backs of them, and let not any one of you turn round; and depart unto the place you are commanded.' 65 And We decreed for him that commandment, that the last remnant of those should be cut off in the morning. 66 Then came the people of the city, exulting at the news. 67 [Lout (Lot)] said: "Verily! these are my guests, so shame me not. 68 Have fear of Allah, and do not humiliate me." 69 They answered: "Have we not forbidden thee [to offer protection] to any kind of people?" 70 He said: 'Here are my daughters; take them (in marriage), if you would be doing' 71 [But the angels spoke thus:] "As thou livest, [O Lot, they will not listen to thee:] behold, in their delirium [of lust] they are but blindly stumbling to and fro!" 72 Then the mighty Blast caught them at sunrise, 73 And We turned the city upside down, and rained on them stones of hardened lava. 74 Behold! in this are Signs for those who by tokens do understand. 75 And surely it is on a road that still abides. 76 Indeed there is a portent in this for those who believe. 77 And the dwellers of the wood surely were wrong-doers. 78 So We took vengeance on them. And verily both are on a high-road open. 79
