The Cave (Al-Kahf)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. 1 (He has made it) Straight to give warning (to the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a fair reward (i.e. Paradise). 2 wherein they shall abide for ever; 3 And to warn those who say “Allah has chosen a child.” 4 a thing about which they have no knowledge, neither they nor their ancestors. Dreadful is the word that comes out of their mouths. What they utter is merely a lie. 5 Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow. 6 We have caused earthly things to seem attractive so that We can see who will excel in good deeds. 7 And indeed We shall one day make all that is on it a barren plain. 8 Do you think that the people of the Cave and the Inscription (the news or the names of the people of the Cave) were a wonder among Our Signs? 9 When the youths sought refuge in the cave, they said: Our Lord! grant us mercy from Thee, and provide for us a right course in our affair. 10 We then thumped upon their ears in the Cave for a number of years. (* Put them to sleep.) 11 Then We woke them up again so that We might see which of the two groups would better calculate the time they had stayed there. 12
