And they ask you about Zulqarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. 83 Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to every thing. 84 He set out (westwards) on an expedition, 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and he found nearby a people. We said, 'O Dhool Karnain, either thou shalt chastise them, or thou shalt take towards them a way of kindness.' 86 He said: "I shall punish whosoever is wicked. He will then be sent back to his Lord who will inflict on him a terrible punishment. 87 but whoever believes and does good works shall have a good reward and We shall facilitate his matter by Our command." 88 Thereafter he followed a way. 89 Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield. 90 So (it was). And We knew all concerning him. 91 Then he set out on another expedition 92 until, when he reached between the two barriers, he found this side of them a people scarcely able to understand speech. 93 They said: O Zul-Qarnain verily Yajuj and Majuj are working corruption in the land; shall we then pay thee tribute on condition that thou place between us and them a barrier! 94 He answered: "That wherein my Sustainer has so securely established me is better [than anything that you could give me]; hence, do but help me with [your labour's] strength, [and] I shall erect a rampart between you and them! 95 Bring me ingots of iron!" Then, after he had [piled up the iron and] filled the gap between the two mountain-sides, he said: "[Light a fire and] ply your bellows!" At length, when he had made it [glow like] fire, he commanded: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour upon it." 96 Such was the rampart that Gog and Magog could not scale, nor could they pierce it. 97 [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." 98 ۞ And on that Day We shall let some of them surge like waves against others, and the Trumpet shall be blown. Then We shall gather them all together. 99 We will fully expose the view of hell on that Day to the disbelievers, 100 Unto those whose eyes had been under a covering from My remembrance, nor had they been able to hear. 101
