Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable! 6 (He was told): "Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be Yahya (John), one whose namesake We never created before." 7 "How can I have a son, O Lord" he said, "when my wife is barren and I am old and decrepit?" 8 Answered [the angel]: "Thus it is; [but] thy Sustainer says, 'This is easy for Me - even as I have created thee aforetime out of nothing'". 9 He said, 'Lord, appoint to me some sign.' Said He, 'Thy sign is that thou shall not speak to men, though being without fault, three nights.' 10 Then he came forth unto his people from the sanctuary, and signified to them: Glorify your Lord at break of day and fall of night. 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
