Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ayn. Sad. 1 Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya. 2 When he softly prayed to his Lord. 3 he prayed: "O my Sustainer! Feeble have become my bones, and my head glistens with grey hair. But never yet, O my Lord, has my prayer unto Thee remained unanswered. 4 And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 "O Zachariah," (it was) said, "We give you good news of a son by name of John.' To none have We attributed the name before." 7 He said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?" 8 He said, "It will be so! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.'" 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 [Allah] said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy 12 And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah 13 And duteous unto his parents, and was not high-handed rebel. 14 'Peace be upon him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised up alive!' 15
