۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 Recall what time he said unto his father and his people: what are these images to which ye are cleaving? 52 They said:"We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said: "Are you expressing your true ideas before us or are you jesting?" 55 He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact". 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 Then he reduced them to fragments, all save the chief of them, that haply they might have recourse to it. 58 They said, 'Who has. done this with our gods? Surely he is one of the evildoers.' 59 Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols". 60 They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify." 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He said: rather he hath wrought it, this big one of them; so question them, if they ever speak. 63 Thereupon they realized their own foolishness and said, "We ourselves are wrong-doers". 64 Thereafter they were made to turn over upon their heads, saying, assuredly thou knowest that they speak not. 65 He said, "Do you, instead of God, worship things that can neither harm nor benefit you?" 66 Fie on you and those you worship besides God! Will you not understand?" 67 They said: Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do (anything). 68 We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham!' 69 They sought to outwit him, but We made them the worst of losers. 70 and We saved him and Lot and brought him to the land upon which We had bestowed Our blessings for all the people of the world. 71 We gave him, in excess, Isaac, and Jacob (for a grandson); and We made each righteous 72 We made them leaders who guided people by Our command. We revealed to them the doing of good, observance of prayer and the giving of alms and Us alone did they worship. 73 And (as for) Lut, We gave him wisdom and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town which wrought abominations; surely they were an evil people, transgressors; 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
