۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?" 52 They answered: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: 'Truly, you and your fathers are in clear error' 54 They said: Have you brought to us the truth, or are you one of the triflers? 55 He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact". 56 By the Lord, I will devise a plan against your deities after you have gone away and turned your backs!" 57 Then he reduced them to fragments, all save the chief of them, that haply they might have recourse to it. 58 They said, “Who has done this to our Gods? He is indeed cruel!” 59 They said: We heard a youth make mention of them, who is called Abraham. 60 They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 And so they turned upon one another, saying, "Behold, it is you who are doing wrong." 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Shame on you and on whatever you worship instead of God. Can you not understand?" 67 They said, "Burn him and help your deities, if you are resolved to do something." 68 'O Fire' We said, 'be coolness and safety for Abraham' 69 They had devised an evil plan (against Abraham), but We turned it into failure." 70 And We saved him and Lot [and brought them] to a land which We had blessed for all people, 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac, and Jacob as a grandson. Each of them We made righteous. 72 And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge and delivered him from the city which practiced abomination. They were indeed a wicked people. 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy: for he was one of the Righteous. 75
